From the South China Sea to the mountains of Nepal, the continued economic rise of the People’s Republic of China has led to a dramatic shift in the balance of power in the region. As a result, the relationship between China and its neighbors, as well as with the United States and its allies, has become increasingly important for the future of the region – and for the rest of the world.
This uniquely compact yet comprehensive directory serves as a richly illustrated, in-depth analysis and overview of the most important conflicts in which China is currently involved – and those that it is likely to be involved with in the future – with a particular focus on People's Liberation Army air power.
Few expected the advances in China’s economy and military to be made so quickly. With the surprise collapse of the Soviet Union, a former common enemy was removed from the equation, focusing attention on differing systems of governance, competition in the realms of economics and security, and growing interdependence.
While the strategic situation in the region and the interdependent relationships are dynamic and complicated, these themes are explained in clear terms by Andreas Rupprecht, a leading observer of Chinese aerospace and the country’s military-industrial complex, and Tom Cooper, the co-authors of the highly regarded Modern Chinese Warplanes from the same publisher.
Flashpoint China is one of the first books in an all-new format from Harpia Publishing. Those readers familiar with Harpia’s previous titles will recognize the layout, color codes and high-quality paper. Compared to earlier Harpia titles, however, the new series are altogether more compact, running to a total of 80 pages, and enabling coverage of ‘smaller’ themes. Of course, these books also retain the now-familiar in-depth coverage, painstaking research and lavish illustrations (around 75 in all) of their ‘bigger brothers’.

Review
superb inquiry, balanced briefings and logical layout – but in a new, compact format spanning just 78 pithy pages!...It’s the stuff of competent intelligence analysis. The generously illustrated effort sports dozens of color photos, 12 tables and six maps. Best of all, this vital volume completely complements Harpia’s excellent Modern Chinese Warplanes – also by author Rupprecht. (Cybermodeler)
In contrast to most other publications which merely list current equipment and new acquisitions of the Chinese Military, this book provides a short historic introduction of each of the regional powder kegs in question to help the reader understand when where and why the People's Republic of China decided to wage military conflicts in the past... Although the book contains only 80 pages, the author managed to distill the very essence of the relevant information and to provide a comprehensive overview of Chinese Air Power and Regional Security such as stated in the book's title. A very good and digestible read to gain insight and understanding of the complex political and military situation regarding the Chinese sphere of influence and interest (Journal of the Joint Air Power Competence Centre (JAPCC))
About the Author
Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. Following a career in worldwide transportation business during which he established a network of contacts in the Middle East and Africa he moved into narrow-focus analysis and writing on small, little-known air forces and conflicts (about which he has collected extensive archives). That resulted in specialisation in such Middle Eastern air forces as those of Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Syria - plus various African and Asian air forces. As well as writing and co-writing 25 other books and more than 400 articles, he has co-written an in-depth analysis of major Arab air forces at war with Israel during the period 1955-73 - resulting in the six-volume book series Arab MiGs.

I didn't give this book the five stars lightly.
it is a short book about 80 pages of an analisys of the PLAAF, its theater commands and their respective orders of battle. it focuses on every theater and the PRC relations with the effected countries which gives context to the PLAAF intentions organization and capabilities in the theater.
this is extremely informative given the ptofound changes and reforms the PLAAF expirienced in the last decade.
