Embracing maturity and setting their differences aside, four nations joined together to form the Balkan League-Serbia, Greece, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. Despite the tremendous land victory celebrated by the Balkan League, disputes over dividing the won territory soon arose. Dissatisfied with its share of the Macedonia, Bulgaria attacked its former allies Serbia and Greece. On August 10, 1913, the Treaty of Bucharest ended the second conflict, but it did not bring the peace. In the First World War, which was initiated by Sarajevo assassination, Balkan again became theater of the war. The Balkan wars have been a popular topic for scholarly research since their resolution. Despite the attention this topic has received, however, the research is far from complete. In this study contributing to the documentation and understanding of this conflict, author Igor Despot has not only reviews the events of the wars, but also considers these events in light of pertinent cultural aspects, identifying the commonalities and differences that may have determined alliances or sparked conflict throughout Balkan history.

The little girl who was attacked on Christmas Day wakes from her coma and gives Smith a clue about the attacker; a piece of a song she heard directly before the attack. Smith then finds himself in a race against time to find this maniac before he kills again.

Good Story

This was a good story and I enjoyed it. Smith and his partner work to solve several murders that may or may not be related. Something's wrong and he fears an innocent man may be convicted. While this is going on, Smith's past intrudes with an interesting side plot involving his sister. The writing and dialog were perhaps a bit stilted, but the most annoying thing was the utter lack of proofreading. Occasionally, there were words missing or transcribed incorrectly, apostrophes omitted from possessives and/or contractions, double quotes in the wrong place and facing the wrong direction. In spite of that, it was still a good read and I recommend it. I hope the author will proofread it properly and republish.

Heartily endorsed by humans, vampires, ogres, trolls, and werewolves alike.

This is a very well written paranormal novel with a decidedly comedic turn. Not what you'd normally expect when reading about the journey of a vampire and a werewolf. And let's not forget Bumache, the assassin that is chasing them. By the way, the name Bumache foreshadows a number of butt references but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

This is also a very practical book since it includes a host of tips on traveling. For example, you should stay in Troll-run hotels due to their exceptional hospitality and attention to detail. And the book even comes with a coupon for using Ogre-powered bicycle tours. Neat, huh?

This book by John Logsdon and Christopher Young reminds me of the middle novels in the Myth Adventures series by Robert Lynn Asprin. The pointed references to slightly renamed companies and individuals like Microsoft, Apple, and Google allow the authors to air their viewpoint on modern society in a very amusing way. I found this treatment very entertaining yet the book also works on a purely straight road adventure basis. When you get right down to it, The Journey Home is a book about the transformation of a mild mannered character into a stronger more self-reliant one and that's a pretty universal tale.

A Great Fun Read

A enjoyable sequel to their 1st book in the Ononokin universe. If you like Asprin's Myth, Inc. books, you will certainly enjoy this book & their previous on A Quest of Undoing. I highly recommend them both. While set in the same "universe", it is not necessary to have read the 1st one but you will probably want to after reading The Journey Home. I hope the authors continue with a 3rd book soon.

In this revised and expanded edition of their established text, Stephen Mulhall and Adam Swift provide an up-to-date overview of the issues and new developments in the debate. Beginning with an account of John Rawls's A Theory of Justice, the book goes on to provide clear presentation of the work of the main communitarians - Michael Sandel, Alisdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor and Michael Walzer. This is followed by a substantially rewritten and expanded assessment of Rawls's more recent work, as that is presented in his new book, Political Liberalism. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which his position enables him to respond to the communitarian critique. The final part of the book examines the writings of three other liberal theorists whose work bears on these issues; the work of Ronald Dworkin is included here for the first time, together with that of Richard Rorty and Joseph Raz. This provides a framework for investigating the different ways in which liberal political thought can claim to be neutral between conceptions of the good.

Clear and accessible in style, with a guiding agenda of themes and issues, this new edition will continue to provide an indispensable aid to students of contemporary political theory.

Interesting Detailed Analysis

This is a scholarly examination of the communitarian challenge to liberal political philosophy. The authors start with John Rawls' positions in A Theory of Justice as a canonical starting point. They sketch out a number of themes; the conception of the person, asocial individualism, universalism, subjectivism or objectivism, and anti-perfectionism vs neutrality that they judge recur in the communitarian critiques. This section is followed by discussions of four strains of communitarian thought - Michael Sandel, Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, and Michael Walzer. These sections are quite well done; good summaries of the works of these individuals with discussions of how their work (explicitly in the case of Sandel and Walzer, implicitly in the case of MacIntyre and Taylor) stands as a critique of Rawls and contemporary strains of liberalism. There is a detailed analysis of Rawls' Political Liberalism, construed here as partly a response to the communitarian critique, again using the identified themes. The authors conclude with 3 chapters looking at alternative liberal political visions, those of Richard Rorty, Ronald Dworkin, and Jonathan Raz.

The strengths of the book are the careful analysis and what seems to be fair analysis of all the figures treated in the book. The authors try hard to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of all arguments. They generally feel that liberal political thinkers, particularly Rawls, do well in meeting most of the communitarian critique though they feel that state neutrality is a chink in the liberal theorists' armor.

There are some defects. The principal one is what might be called the Rawlsian writing style. In an effort to be very specific and careful in their analysis, the authors have produce a lot of fairly labored prose. I think a lot of the authors' thinking could have been presented in a more clear and direct style. The authors omit an important fact about the most impressive communitarian thinkers - MacIntyre and Taylor. Both are Roman Catholic theists and this is responsible, at least partly, for their fairly teleological views. While the authors conclude with some paragraphs about the potential weaknesses of liberal positions, more than anything, they leave one with an impression of the power of liberal theory, particularly Rawls' theories.

Funny from beginning to end

Wow- this was significantly better than the first in the series, THE REMARKABLE MISS FRANKENSTEIN. Jane Paine Van Helsing is a very likeable character. Her father is the drill sergeant of vampire killing and has taught her from an early age how to kill vampires in a myriad of ways, usually involving the use of the Van Helsing stakes. Unfortunately for Jane, she gets nauseated at the sight of blood and is absolutely terrified of the spiders that tend to populate the cemeteries and crypts where vampires are usually found. Jane would prefer to be bird watching, and much to the embarrassment of her family has never successfully staked a vampire. Oh she has tried, generally resulting in ruining her gown and causing great amusement for her cousins. Clair Frankenstein Huntsley, Jane's best friend and the main character from the first book in the series, has the hare-brained idea to matchmake Jane and the Master Vampire of the city, Neil Asher, the Earl of Wolverton. Meanwhile, Jane is determined to please her father and attempts to stake Asher, only to have the two of them found in a seemingly compromising situation. And did I mention that Jane also staked Asher in the rear end? Needless to say, Asher reluctantly marries Jane and it is only when the true villain of the story, the infamous Dracul, attempts to make Jane his bride that Asher fully realizes his feelings for Jane. This book was funny from beginning to end with numerous plays on words and intermingling of history. I was particularly amused with the play on words involving Madame and Colonel Saunders and the house of ill repute, the Birds of Paradise Club. This book is highly recommended! I'm glad I gave Minda Webber a second chance as she truly delivered with this hilarious novel.

Ok, I get it. She's plain...

How many times does the reader really need to be reminded that our heroine is a plain Jane? Apparently about 30 times or so to make sure we get the fact she's not a babe. Fine. She's plain. Move on.

When I find myself talking to the heroine, telling her to get a backbone, it's always a bad sign. Jane is brave on occasion, but is an utter doormat and victim when dealing with her father, another person who reminds us Jane isn't pretty. Her willingness to be abused by every man in her life made me a little sick.

And, the sad attempts at humor by changing cliches and sayings into vampiric mottos got tiring very quickly.

The book had a great premise, but a good editor would have made a huge difference in this book.

goes for farce, falls short of good genre fiction

I read vampire novels (you can see my reviews of dozens of them). I read Regency romances (and have reviewed a few). So you'd think that something that purports to be about a Regency-ish vampire hunter would be right up my alley, right? Well, it would be, if it were well done. But I'm picky about "well-done." I insist on at least the basics of characterization and plot, and a bit of historical accuracy in my historical romances, and dialogue that's witty. This book fails on all those counts.

It falls most seriously short on historical accuracy and period atmosphere. Some of that is deliberate; the author is trying so hard to get in sly puns and allusions to 20th-21st century pop culture that she deliberately stretches the way the characters talk. But other anachronisms are accidental and annoying - references to going to Plan B if Plan A doesn't work; references to someone's ego (I notice that one in many historical romances; people seem to space over the fact that we didn't start using that terminology until Freud laid it out at the turn of the 20th century...) Incidentally, the book is allegedly set in 1828, which is technically post-Regency, but not yet Victorian. There's a reference to Dr. Jekyll, even though Stevenson didn't write "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" until 1885. And so on.

Some of the plot devices were so predictable as to be passe - our heroine is carrying a flask of brandy and a vial of holy water in the same pocket; of COURSE she's going to accidentally throw the brandy instead of the holy water. (Let's never mind how our heroine has a liquor flask in the pocket of a light muslin gown; let's never mind that gowns of the period did not have pockets as we know them...)

And many of the allusions to pop culture were not worth making - the version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," for example, was (a) stupid; (b) not very well done as to imitating meter and rhyme, and (c) totally pointless with regard to the plot.

There are also the usual typos, grammatical errors, and word misusages that one finds in all too many mass market paperbacks these days; publishers don't seem to employ copy editors any longer.

To give the book its due, it's not totally unreadable. For a few pages, the allusions to pop culture are fun; if they came at about 1 every 10 pages, instead of being smushed together in run-on fashion, it would be a very funny style. I suspect that someone who isn't a dedicated Regency reader would be far less annoyed by the anachronisms than I am, and might therefore enjoy the book more. And if your only previous exposure to vampire fiction has been recent work that's more or less romance - Betsy the Vampire Queen, for instance - and has not included the serious authors such as Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, then you probably wouldn't be as bothered by the haphazard treatment of vampire powers and weaknesses, or the mixing of vampire and other supernatural cultures, as I am. So, if all you're looking for is a light read, not holding out for an actual good Regency or intense vampire experience, then this might be acceptable.

Essential Reference for Every Engineer

I just recently passed the mechanical PE exam (fluids discipline), and I thought I would share the studying strategy that seemed to work for me. The very first thing you should do is purchase this book, the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual (MERM), even if you do not plan to take the PE for several years. This is an excellent book that is useful for any mechanical engineer to have. Plus, if you begin to use it now, it will only help to make you more comfortable with it for the exam.

Begin your study about 5-6 months before the exam. At this point you should also purchase the associated Practice Problems for the MERM. Each day, read a chapter and then try to work the practice problems from that chapter. This will take you about 1-2 hours per day. The key is to not burn yourself out, so begin early and only do a set amount per day. On some days when the chapter is short, or you have extra time you could read and work problems for an extra chapter or two. Also, I decided to skip the math and statistics chapters because I felt like I still remembered the basics and there are no general math questions on the exam. So if you feel the same way, you can eliminate 12-13 chapters right off the bat. At this pace, in about 3 months you will have read the entire book (around 1500 pages) and at least attempted every single practice problem. At this point you will be in full panic mode, because you won’t feel comfortable with any of the practice problems because as I said, they are much harder than what is on the exam. Relax! The practice problems for the MERM are infinitely more complicated than what you will encounter on the exam. So do not worry too much if you don’t exactly know how to do them. Just try to work each problem, if you get stuck just read through the solution and try to understand. Keep in mind that no one can work all the problems in that book, so you are no different. Just do your best. When you have finished the book, it should be right about the time that you have to choose your specific mechanical discipline for the exam. Since you have seen all the types of problems, you should be able to make an informed decision on which of the three that you are best at.

As a general rule of thumb for the exam, anything you can think of that will save you any time is worth it. The MERM is absolutely jam-packed with charts, tables, graphs, etc. As you are reading through and working problems, you will start to notice you refer to some of them fairly often. It’s a good idea to put a tab on the page where the useful information is located. By the time I took the exam, my MERM had tons of tabs.

When you have finished the MERM and its practice problems, purchase ALL THREE (fluids, mechanical systems, HVAC) sample problems and solution booklets from the NCEES. The first 40 questions are exactly the same in the three booklets, but the next 40 will be different. It’s still worth it to buy all three, because in the morning session of the exam, you could encounter any of these problems. Make yourself out a schedule where you work 10-15 problems per day. This time, you will need to actually be able to do the problems, unlike the MERM problems. These problems are designed to represent what is on the test, and also to be able to be completed in 6 minutes. You will start to feel a lot more comfortable at this point because the questions are much easier than what you’ve seen so far. Work all 160 questions over and over in groups of 10-15 per day until the day of the exam. By now you should be very comfortable, and ready to tackle whatever they throw at you.

Update in response to some questions: On test day, you will see people walk into the exam with dozens of books. Some even stand up all the books vertically on their table like a little library bookshelf. You will immediately wonder if you did not bring enough material. Rest assured! If you go into the test relying on this many books, then you are in trouble. There simply isn't enough time to think about which book to open and then search for the answer. I went into the exam with only the following materials and it was more than enough:

Tips to pass the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam

I passed the October 2015 Mechanical Engineering PE exam (I chose to take the Mechanical Systems and Materials in the afternoon), and I would like to share with you how I prepared for the exam. I did not enroll in a course, but I used the following four resources, all purchased on Amazon:
(1) Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 13th Ed
(2) PE Exam Review for Mechanical Systems and Materials: PE Review Book for ME
(3) PE Mechanical Engineering: Mechanical Systems and Materials Practice Exam
(4) Six-Minute Solutions for Mechanical PE Exam Mechanical Systems and Materials Problems, 2nd Ed

The first of these four resources, of which this review concerns, is by far the most essential. I repeatedly used Lindeburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual during the actual test. While the other three resources were helpful, and I recommend that you purchase and use them, the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual was by far the most helpful. Most of the chapters contain material that is "fair game" on the exam. You can compare what the exam covers versus the chapters in this book. You will notice that some chapters contain material that is no longer covered on the exam. I skipped these chapters. For the chapters that did contain material on the exam (which was a majority of the book), I read them completely, and I worked through all examples. Most example problems have solutions in both S.I. and U.S. systems, and this is helpful because the exam can use either system. I switched back and forth: if I solved one example problem using S.I., then I would solve the next using the U.S. system. Furthermore, to get extra studying time, I studied during my lunch break at work. I ate for about 15 minutes and studied for about 45 minutes. If you do this 5 days per week, then that is an extra 3.75 hours of study per week that you did not have to do at home. Plus, when you bring a really big book to work and read it, people will look and think you look really smart.

I will also review the other three resources listed in this review. In my opinion, the afternoon exam is orders of magnitude harder than the morning exam, so prepare for the afternoon exam even more than the morning exam. Best of luck, I wish you well!

Take this to the PE, along with a few others...

Great preparation guide and a great general reference. Spend time with it before the exam so you know where everything (generally) is, and tab out the book so you know how to get to places you need to use. A good rule of thumb that I used was, any time I took a practice exam and used the MERM for a lookup, I stickynoted that page, knowing that I needed to tab it later.

The book takes you back to first principles, and derives many of the equations you will need to find and use on the exam. It also rigorously uses constants of gravity in the USCS versions of equations. This may inspire you to needlessly divide a pound-force by a pound-mass just for the sake of clearing out units. However, this may be useful to you should gravity not be a constant in the particular problem you're working.

It treated me well as my last-ditch effort to get an equation I needed - and in fact it saved my butt at least a couple of times. However, getting those equations to work for me took some trial and error because they weren't in the final form I needed to use.

Cameron Hydraulic Data and the ASHRAE Pocket Guide may serve you better for equations that are ready to use right away. Cameron Hydraulic Data especially has a number of equations that you just insert your flowrate in GPM and your pipe size in inches, and out pops your velocity in FPM or your velocity head in feet. Shortcut equations, easy. Not a strong point of the MERM. I went into the test with Cameron, ASHRAE Pocket Guide, ASHRAE Handbook 4-pack, my favorite Thermodynamics textbook (Cengel & Boles 4e from college), Property Tables from Cengel and Boles, and about 20-30 pages of my own handwritten thermo, fluids and HVAC notes. That was enough, I don't think the MERM alone would have been.

About the Author
Professor Marlowe Smaby has been at the University of Nevada, Reno in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology since 1992. Previously, he was a Professor of Psychology and Human Service Professions at the University of Minnesota, Duluth for 21 years. He is also a licensed Psychologist and National Board Certified Counselor. Prior to his career in counselor education he was a school teacher and the first elementary school counselor in Wisconsin. Professor Smaby has published many articles in counseling journals and has made many presentations at counselor conventions and was editor of Counselor Education and Supervision for six years. His research interests include counseling skills training, school counseling, and counselor education and supervision and using technology in counseling. He teaches counseling skills, introduction to counseling, clinic supervision and school counseling internships.

Cleborne D. Maddux, Ph.D. is Foundation Professor of Counseling and Educational Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. Before going to graduate school, he worked for nine years in the public schools of Oregon and Arizona. He earned a master's degree from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He has been a faculty member and department chair at universities in Texas, Arizona and Nevada. Professor Maddux teaches courses in beginning and advanced statistics. He is the author of books and articles dealing with counseling, special education, and information technology in education.

Yhisnis an easy read very nice looking book. Great information it does however trick you there is a cd you can get with it but you have to make sure you are buying a book that explicitly says the cd comes with it

Undisclosed Limits for Kindle

Content is sound, but my review is for undisclosed limitations for the Kindle Mac app. The author sets a "copy limit", which while usually applies to the copy and paste of text, also applies for Accessibility functions like Apple's VoiceOver. Very disappointed.

Oh, and think you're getting the same content of the physical book? Nope. Self-assessments in Appendix, Pg. 231-237 "unavailable due to copyright issues". Did they tell you this? Nope.

SUCH A GREAT BOOK!! I cannot praise this book enough. It was required for our graduate counseling microskills course and I really enjoyed reading it- I actually read the entire book. It is so easy to read and get through, it is not redundant like other required texts and offers good opportunities to practice all of the skills.
The videos the professor had that went with the book were not that great though. But this book is awesome!!
