The first thorough synthesis of Biogeography

I waited a long time for this book to come out, after hearing about it at a professional conference. I was at first disappointed by the lack of more colorful graphics, but then when I was able to read the text thoroughly, it was clear that content was the reason to buy this.
While others have tried providing syntheses for biogeography, this is the first and only one that has struck me as appropriate for classroom use. It would be quite suitable for an upper-division undergraduate course in Biogeography and many in Biology will also find this volume useful, especially those in Ecology or Conservation Biology.
All in all, MacDonald's first stab at a modern synthesis of a growing field hits the mark, and should only improve with time and further editions. This volume, although pricey in hardback form, will make a great companion to Quammen's "Song of the Dodo Bird" in elucidating the complexity and beauty of biogeography. Kudos to the author.

This shift in perception has revealed the startling frequency of occurrences of date rape, obscuring the divide between rape and what was once just sex. Just Sex? combines an overview of the existing literature with an analysis of recent research to examine the psychological and cultural implications of this new epidemic. The result is the conclusion that feminist theory on sexual victimisation has gone both too far and not far enough. The reader is presented with a challenging and original perspective on the issues of rape, sex and the body, incorporating subjects including:

* the social constructionism of sex, subjectivity and the body

an excellent book drawing on post-structuralism examining the ways in which women's experiences of rape are mitigated as 'just sex.' The book highlights the ways in which men are constructed and thus naturalised to be sexually desiring, aggressive subjects, while women are passive objects to be penetrated who lack sexual desire - the result being that women's experiences of rape are interpreted as 'simply' unwanted sex. Highly recommend to any feminist socio-legal or psychology student/scholar.

A near-perfect historical instrument method

This is one of the best method books I've seen for a historical instrument. Every essential topic is covered: tuning, intonation, articulation, fingering, baroque & classical ornamentation (fingering for trills off of each note, for instance). Period sources (notably Quantz, plus several others) are quoted frequently. There is also a good discussion on the differences between different historical models. Plus there is a wealth of exercises and tunes from the period. While not pretending to be complete in every sense, this is far superior to many methods I've seen for recorder and other instruments. It's also quite affordable.

The book has great instruction at your fingertips to start learning the one-keyed flute. There is so much here! But it's not bogged down with copious trivia. This book is especially helpful for the Boehm flutist who wishes to transition into some baroque flute playing. When you purchase this volume, you'll have everything you need (apart from the instrument itself!) to get started, and also to avoid injury to your hands and fingers through incorrect position or over-practicing. Wonderful, sound advice clearly presented.

This is an excellent book that has become a standard in learning the baroque flute. From care of the instrument to the proper approach to trills and vibrato it is a must for anyone interested in learning how to play one-key flute. I only wish there was a part II.

Great ending to a great series!

This third enstallment was a geat ending to this great series. I'm so happy with how this story ended. I love both Adrian and Victoria and thought little Adriana was sooo adorable. Loved this series.
