Readable and precise

Clark is one of those few scholars who can present a complicated topic in a very accessible way. She touches on the most important and interesting areas of child language acquisition, citing others' studies as well as her own research. You don't need any previous knowledge of this field to enjoy this book. I highly recommend it!

Heavy on data, not so much on readability

Although it was refreshing to read an account of language acquisition from the point of the view of Pragmatics, I felt the text was very dense and not organized well within the chapters. Dr. Clark includes information about many relevant experiments, but at times it was hard to distinguish her own interpretations from paraphrased citations. The chart dealing with phonetics also had quite a few errors.
I hope the second edition turns out to be better than this one!

A Teacher's best friend

The third edition of Sentence Combining just arrived. I can't wait to get to class Monday to start my students on these exercises! William Strong wrote another book about writing development, Coaching Writing, that I purchased at a writing workshop. The discussion of sentence combining as a development technique excited my teaching, but I don't have time (or energy) to prepare sentences for use with the technique. Sentence Combining fills that slot perfectly. This activity greatly improved my student's ability to revise their writing. They were able to see that revision is a process. For some it was a true "ah ha!" moment! The techique I found in the first section of Coaching Writing is the focus of Sentence Combining A Composing Book. I can't praise these two books enough. Every English teacher at my high school has heard me praise William Strong's work, and several have adopted his strategies. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

An excellent resource for sentence composing and editing

This book is a classic now, and it should be. Research in writing instruction has demonstrated that students who work on sentence combining do improve as writers. The book presents the student with short kernel sentences to combine into longer, more complex structures. In combining, students stretch into learning to control sentences for length, pace, and complexity. When they edit their sentences, they practice the revision skills good writers all use. I have used this book successfully with remedial and entry level college students; it would also be appropriate for high school students and advanced intermediate students. It is not a technical grammar text, and can be useful without a sophisticated knowledge of grammar. The selections are engaging and are effectively presented in order of difficulty. This would be a useful text for home schoolers at the high school level.

The Signature of God by Grant Jeffrey shows us that you can prove the bible is of Supernatural origin with evidence. The Evidence Jeffrey uses is The Historicity of the Bible; He shows us how Archeology proves out the Biblical accounts; He shows us how the Bible had scientific and Medical evidence that was correct hundreds and thousands of years before modern science; He shows us a code hidden in the Text; and finally shows us how bible prophecy proves out the Scriptures (Jesus fulfilled over 100 specific Prophecy's with his first coming and many prophecy's are being fulfilled right before our eyes, such as Israel becoming a nation again in 1948). This is a must have for Christians and Skeptics alike.

Anyone that is struggling with their faith, or simply wants spiritual reassurance, this book is a great place to start. Excellent for newbies through 'pretty good' players

Excellent for all but quite advanced players. Especially good for instruction due to not only the content, but the excellent orthographic (sort of 3D) chessboard illustrations now readily possible using computer software. Begins at the VERY beginning and works through openings, basic strategy & tactics, and the end game. It folds open for study while playing, gives all of the important ideas that a beginner needs to know, and gets you ready for an intermediate book. Pair with the Deep Fritz computer program. An excellent book on chess. It's spiral bound and easy to lie flat next to your chess board and set up the examples and lessons. The graphics are very clear and easy to read and the examples are extremely informative. This book deserves much more attention. In time it could be a classic.

Disorganized

This book is very hard to follow in my opinion.
The main problem is that the actual information is lost in the middle of plenty of examples making it very hard for the student to synthesize the topic. To make matter worse, the example seems to stick out more that the remaining of the text due to too much colors in the titles. Most of the text of each chapter could fit in just a couple pages highlighted by a couple of judicious examples and demonstrations.

The development of a tradition of doing philosophy

In Book I of his Politics, Aristotle writes, "But he who is unable to live in society, or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or a god: he is no part of a state." Something similar is true for intellectual work: when you are educated in a paradigm, there are questions that feel natural and you know that other people also care about these questions, while if you do not have a paradigm your thinking will be scattered. In the Latin Middle Ages, people did not have a paradigm of philosophy and science to work in, and thus their writings seem amateurish and esoteric to us. Until the 11th century, it is more useful to think about the development of a tradition of doing philosophy than about the actual writings as such.

This book tells us about the antique writings that were transmitted to the Latin Middle Ages: Chalcidius's translation and commentary of Plato's Timaeus (the only of Plato's writings that were transmitted), Cicero, Seneca, St. Augustine, Martianus Capella's De nuptiis, Macrobius's commentary on Cicero's Dream of Scipio, Porphyry's Isagoge, Priscian's Grammar, Boethius's translations and writings, Pseudo-Dionysius, the Categoriae decem of Pseudo-Augustine, and not many others.

Eriugena is not a representative early medieval thinker, and rather than writing books like his Periphyseon, the conventional form of scholarship was writing glosses or at most commentaries on the great works that had been transmitted. This was a worthy project and should not be derided as the work of lesser minds: there was a huge amount of digestion of antique writings that had to be done, especially sorting out how far they could be reconciled with Revelation. The strongest thread that Marenbon follows in this book is Aristotelian logic, which never seems to have been entirely forgotten, although at times was understood and used at a low level.

Writing about St. Damian, who is often characterized as a reactionary, Marenbon says: "In the mid-eleventh century, then, especial attention was paid by thinkers to logic in connection with theology. In the late eighth and ninth centuries, a conjunction of these two disciplines had led scholars to ask certain philosophical questions and develop some philosophical ideas. Part of this process had consisted in making logical concepts metaphysical ones, or developing theological implications from them; and the result had sometimes been to confuse logic, metaphysics and theology in a manner superficially exciting, but ultimately meaningless."

Marenbon discusses St. Anselm and Abelard, and also a writer on natural philosophy about whom I hadn't heard before, William of Conches, who I found remarkable for agreeing with Epicurean atomism which was not a common opinion among scholastic writers.
