Much needed book about ordinary Muslim's faith in Central Asia
By Roar Ljoekjell
Very valuable for anyone who wants to understand Islam in Central Asia. Most of what I have been able to find about Islam in this area is about the relationship between religion and politics. This ethnographic research from the town Turkistan in Kazakstan describes faith and practice among ordinary Muslims. The research is of course from a limited geographical area, but it is probably relevant for understanding Muslims in other parts of Central Asia too. Another book with a similar approach is Maria Elisabeth Louw's "Everyday Islam in Post-Soviet Central Asia," which describes Islam in Uzbekistan, mainly Bukhara.

Unique Ethnography of Kazakh Muslims
By JPC
Privratsky’s Muslim Turkistan makes the argument that Islam as practiced by the Kazakhs, is not the “universalized and increasingly standardized modern version” but “an awakened expression of pre-modern, “locally normative” Islam” (11). Privratsky argues that it is a local focus on cemetery sites, shrines and funerary rituals that is most important to the Kazakh conception of Islam. As Privratsky writes, what matters most “is that the Kazakh ancestors are thought of as Muslim” (19). Culinary rituals play an important part in the ‘locally normative’ version of Kazakh Islam Privratsky describes, and to “fail to emit the aroma” of baursaq fried in fat is more blameworthy than failing to attend the mosque (140). Privratsky own personal history is an interesting departure from the standard academic narrative, and his own religious views seem to make only the odd appearance – apart from the concluding section of the book- in statements such as his claim to practice “ethnography in the spiritual mode” (26), although it is unclear what exactly this entails.
