Don't reinvent the wheel!

I have been using these materials to aid me if full time Kurdish learning for the past couple years. I love them! For learning Behdini Kurdish they are the best on the market! In fact, I have not even been able to find any Behdini Kurdish resources besides this course. Every book in the series is packed full of resources that will help you learn the language accurately and efficiently.

I especially appreciate the Categories of Vocabulary because it allows me to learn groupings of words. In my studies if I wanted to focus on, for example, kitchen words, I would just open the purple book to the kitchen section. It saved me so much time not having to look up every individual word I wanted to know in the dictionary.

The Exercises in Behdini Grammar book is such a life saver! It saved me from having to reinvent the wheel. For the most part the average Kurd does not have knowledge of Kurdish grammar as their school instruction had been in Arabic. My Kurdish language helpers, though amazing, could not explain to me the grammar. Without this grammar book my language learning would have been so painful! Don't reinvent the wheel! Get this book! Get the whole series!

Books A and B are gold mines! They are chock full of Kurdish phrases, cultural questions, proverbs and stories. I find that the best way to learn language is to learn phrase by phrase rather than word for word. Having books A and B teaches Kurdish phrases that I could never logically piece together using my American culture and a dictionary. Lately in my language learning I have been focusing on "The Stories told in Kurdistan," to teach myself grammar, new vocabulary, pronunciation and phrases. First I read the story provided. Then I listen to the story using the audio recordings. (I listen while I drive in the car. So helpful!) After listening several times I memorize the story. Then I try to tell the story to my language helper. While telling her the story I record myself and then play it back so my language helper can make corrections. Much later I might forget the story but what sticks with me are phrases that are forever burned in mind as well as the new vocabulary I learned and used. I noticed that even doing this one time immediately improved my speaking skills.

A constant resource that I have always at my side is the Behdini Grammar Reference Cards. At only 7 pages long it is short and sweet and is exactly what it's name suggests; a quick reference. One chart in particular has made my life so much easier. The Verb Endings/ Tenses chart has all the tenses of the Kurdish language on one chart! Countless times I have referred to this chart while in still in conversation so I would be able to correctly and quickly conjugate my verbs to make myself understood. In one word, it is beautiful!

Even my Kurdish Language helpers are constantly amazed at what comes out of Cherie's books. They always say, "I think she knows more Kurdish than I do." Save yourself the time and energy from trying to figure out the Kurdish language all on your own and buy these books! I would have been up the creek without a paddle without them!

Great Kurdish language learning resources for serious language learners.

I used these materials when they were first being published about 20 years ago and have had good success in my language learning. I worked with a private language helper and also did a lot of studies on my own in addition to visiting Kurdish friends so that I could practice what I was learning.

The grammar book includes a lot of vocabulary and reading/story exercises in addition to grammar exercises. The yellow dictionary has a lot of user-friendly example sentences. The purple dictionary organizes the vocabulary by category (e.g., fruit), which made memorizing the words helpful. Book A has a lot of practical pronunciation, listening, speaking, and conversation ideas and activities. The grammar overview and stories in Book B were especially appealing to my style of language learning. The audio recordings weren't recorded in a sound-proof recording studio (LOL!) but the variety of native speakers' voices is helpful. The sentence structure cards and vocabulary flash cards were published after I had already learned Kurdish, but they would probably be helpful, too.

The whole course is in the Latin/Roman script (similar to English), but there is a section in Book B that shows you how to read and write in the Kurdish script (which is similar to Farsi or Arabic). I worked with a Kurdish friend to learn to write and then later taught myself to read by reading simple documents and books.

great course

this course is very clearly structured and with clear instructions for you to study alone or with others. I used it from beginning to end and in that 6 - 8 months I achieved a comfortable ability to converse with kurdish speakers who were delighted that I had learnt to speak to them in their own language. 4 years later I still refer to it for vocabulary and for the harder everyday verb forms because it is so clearly presented. About the Author
Fergus McWilliam was born in Scotland and grew up in Toronto. He has been a member of the Berlin Philharmonic since 1985 and was a founding member of the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet in 1988. He has spent the last twenty years touring the world with the Berlin Philharmonic and has made over a dozen recordings with his ensemble. During his career, he has performed with many of the major conductors of our times, including Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Ababado, Sir Simon Rattle, Leonard Bernstein, Carlos Kleiber, Seiji Ozawa, Pierre Boulez, James Levine, Daniel Barenboim, and more. His solo and chamber music activities continue to take him throughout Europe, the Americas. and the Far East. Fergus McWilliam is also an internationally esteemed and sought-after teacher. He continues to give master classes at leading music schools in many countries He currently resides in Berlin.

Not to be missed by the horn afflicted

If the subtitle "horn heresies" is not a strong enough indication, the publisher's description'"an anti horn-method method"'spells out Fergus McWilliam's ambition in this unusual contribution to horn pedagogy. His experience over years of teaching is that "the way the horn is taught is too frequently not the way the horn actually needs to be played." For the student in all of us, he reminds us that there is no alternative to taking ownership of the process of achieving mastery.

Blow Your OWN Horn is not a book for beginners. McWilliam makes clear that he is speaking to advanced students and teachers, players who can look at their experience "from the other side" of working through the popular methods. As a perpetual student myself, I get his view that: "It is not amateurish, flawed theories and unqualified teaching that ruin young hornists. Ultimately it is the students themselves who permit it to happen!"

McWilliam's anti-method method uses a short essay format that enables him to keep readers on their toes with anecdotes, galleries of mental images to consider, lists of ambitions to prioritize, probing questions to ponder, physical exercises to try out. The two major chapters in the practical section - on embouchure and breathing respectively - are insightful additions to the literature. The same is true of a section on auditions and one taking on high-horn, low-horn mythology. His treatment of misconceptions about the diaphragm, the multiple kinds of inhalations possible, and "air in motion" should be required reading, even for Arnold Jacobs aficionados.

Fergus McWilliam is a 27-year member of the highly regarded Berlin Philharmonic horn section. Born in Scotland, raised largely in Canada, a past member of the Detroit Symphony, he brings a refreshing international perspective to his ideas about playing the horn.

Great book!

I love this book! I heard about it through Sarah's Horn Hangouts. In my two, very short but very dedicated, years of playing the horn, I've always thought that there must be a better way to learning and playing the horn than grinding all day in a practice room. I even rejected some conventional ways of playing because I realized my body was a better performer and teacher of the horn than some of the rigid advice I was getting.

The first half of the book is mostly about the practice of skepticism: how teachers teach the way they do and why it's not necessarily the best way, how misconceptions about the horn are formed and debunked, how students are so eager to learn without questioning. The second half is about actual horn technique. I think this book is simply great for not just the horn, but just living life in general. It's in accordance with my own philosophy about musicianship: it's life itself, just expressed differently.

I disagree with the reviews that this book isn't for beginners. I think, actually, that it's best for beginners to dislodge themselves from misconceptions or pure adherence to a school of playing. I would still classify myself as a "beginner" who benefited a lot from this book.

Blow You Own Horn! It's a great book for many many reasons.

The one book all horn -players should read and own. McWilliams's book is not a method book but a book that challenges us gently and occasionally not so gently into a re-examination of what motivates us to play the way we do. Horn Heresies also asks us to look at our deeply held precepts about horn-playing and to ask ourselves if we really need to go on doing the same old same old horn-shuffle when we could be engaged in a dynamic and thrilling horn-dance with our instruments. Don't look here for horn exercises, it's not that kind of book, but it is one to engage with and ponder over thoughtfully.

Imagination-inspiring fun from 1901

The First Men in the Moon tells an unlikely tale of two intrepid (but unsuited) adventurers that travel to the moon in an anti-gravity ship. What they find in the moon is a complex civilization of “Selenites” with whom their interactions are less than friendly. The story is told from the perspective of Mr. Bedford, an inscrutable narrator that can hardly be believed. The reader gets a distinct impression that Bedford’s accounting of what happened on the moon may be massaged. His apparent bravery and Cavor’s apparent weakness don’t always jive with what seems likely in many scenarios. Hidden between the lines are suggestions that Bedford may have been to blame for much of the trouble the duo find themselves in. For HG Wells to accomplish these layers of complexity in his characters with such a deft touch speaks not only to his ability as a writer, but also to his understanding of humanity. Bedford and Cavor (as well as most of Wells’ characters) make for excellent companions with which to explore early science fiction. Wells doesn’t shy away from a bit of heavy-handed philosophy in his books, and this one is no exception. The Selenite society provides an opportunity for some rather critical examinations of Wells’ own Victorian England. Mostly though, this is a book to read for imagination-inspiring fun. Highly recommended.

Good dramatization and interesting politics

Since most of the reviews here concern the BOOK of First Men in the Moon, I thought I would add a comment about the Alien Voices audio production of this story. This is a very well-crafted presentation of the Wells novel, well-acted and lively, and with a good script. The voices of the Selenites (Moon inhabitants) are very eerie and alien, the sound effects are realistic, and the music enhances the story too. I should note that I have not read the novel, so I can't really compare it to this audio adaptation, but this audio dramatization is a good one at any rate. It's much more detailed than the movie from the 1960s, especially concerning the political structure of the Selenite civilization. Since some other reviewers have gone into considerable detail about the story, I won't repeat that in mine, except to note that the political discussion in it is particularly interesting, and this is also a fun adventure story so it can be enjoyed in that way as well. I highly recommend this Alien Voices production.

Sci-Fi Classic

The First Men in the Moon It's great to see that one of H.G.'s enduring classics is now handily produced for your Kindle or iPhone. It is a "must read" for all fans of classic sci-fi. It's a quick read so it makes a good travel book. If you haven't read it before, it will seem outdated (or even a little cheesy in some places) by today's standards. However, it is an excellent starter story for younger readers, whereas "War of the Worlds" might be a little scary. A great addition to my "free" collection.

Very worthwhile

By the time I got a hold on this book I had learned many of it's lessons in the school of hard knocks. It sure would have saved a lot of time and trouble if I'd had read it 10 years sooner. If you are a newly licensed Engineer or Land Surveyor with any interest in management you need this book.

Basic 101 but a great go to resource. It is priced a bit high but difficult to come by. I attend many of these professional conferences and books like these are pricey.
