Abel finally takes work, but it requires extensive travel through the war zones, and so Mireille is left essentially alone. With France lost to her, and horribly misfit in wartime Germany, suspected by her neighbors of spying for the Allies, Mireille has to define a life for herself, a life that is as quiet as possible in a dangerous world.

Sins of the Innocent is a lyrical portrait of those harsh years, infused with doubt, anger, and the author’s love of life. These were the years in which Mireille learned the difference between quiet persistence and courage—during WWII in Europe, a time when so many had to find their own small places in history. It was the era that determined who Mireille Marokvia was—and who she still is.

A politically naïve French country girl when she entered the Sorbonne in 1928, Marokvia (Immortelles: Memoir of a Will-o'-the-Wisp), who today is almost 98 years old, soon fell in love with art student Abel; the two enjoyed the Parisian bohemian scene of the 1930s, without worrying much about world events. Even when Hitler took Austria in 1938, no one seemed too shocked—it "was as if we had begun to think he had the right to do what he was doing." Alas, Abel was German and by 1939, he decided to return to Stuttgart. Marokvia followed and the two married, each verifying that they came from four generations of Jew-free ancestry. While both hated the Nazis and refused to collaborate actively, neither felt able to do anything against the regime. Abel avoided the military by working for a propaganda ministry, traveling throughout the Reich sketching for various government publications, while Marokvia variously worked as a weaver, translator and subsistence farmer. They considered themselves innocent of Nazi atrocities, yet sullied by the passive sin of complicity. At times they contemplated suicide or murdering Hitler, but then went on with finding housing, food and work, like other citizens. Readers of last year's A Woman in Berlin will find the similarities (constant suspicion of neighbors, ignorance about Jews) and contrasts (Marokvia reports no rapes or prostitution) illuminating. Engrossing memoir of Nazi Germany from a foreign woman's experience

Sins of the Innocent is the wartime memoir of a French woman who married a German man in interwar Europe and then had to endure the Nazi years in Germany. In Spain when the Spanish civil war breaks out, boyfriend Abel is nearly executed as a spy. He manages to survive, they marry, go on vacations, and try to live a normal life as life in Germany is consumed by Nazism. Abel is an artist and an ardent anti-Nazi. Conscripted when war breaks out, he spends the war in various drawing-related jobs, and manages to stay alive in jobs that are sometimes near the front lines. Meanwhile Mireille endures the war in various locales, and in the telling we learn frankly about life in wartime Germany from the eyes of a foreigner in its midst. Because Mireille is a strong, sympathetic, and acutely observant person in frequently unsafe situations, we get a clear-sighted picture of life in Nazi Germany from a woman's experience and a woman's perspective. It's a book well worth the reading. Smoothly translated and engrossing in its open-eyed view of life in a bizarre world, it's a hard book to put down.

I'd give it a three and a half

Maybe it's unfair of me to give it only 3 1/2 stars, but the writing in this book is nowhere near the quality of the first book of hers I read, "Immortelles". And the story isn't as interesting, either. I wish she had gone into more detail about her feelings and the way the situation impacted them, other than the fact that they were often geographically separated. From a reader's standpoint, it was very emotionally unsatisfying. The best part was when she lived in that little house near the woods. I would have been interested in hearing more about living as a weaver in northern Germany, and a better explanation of why she didn't choose to stay there, while her husband had to travel for work. Much is left unsaid. Her descriptions of flora and fauna are her strong suits; emotions and her rational for making certain decisions are her weakest suits. A book worth reading, but don't pay retail for it... better yet, get it from your library - but "Immortelles" was so sweet and lyrical!

The Cruel Idea Behind Making of a Nation

No wonder why this great poet and literature genius has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Anyone who reads this book clearly gets an understanding as to how much this author has studied human mind and its social aspects that had been troubling the humanity ever since power and materialistic possessions have taken over spiritual freedom.
The book is divided into three parts- Nationalism in the West, Nationalism of Japan and Nationalism in India.
Rabindranath’s idea about a Nation is that of an evolution of a great organization of human mind, wealth, machines and power to control the minds and bodies of all that is surrounding this great artificial body. As per him, Power is a scientific product made in the political laboratory of the Nation, through the dissolution of personal humanity. As per him the West is necessary to the East and vice versa. His main target is the British (whenever he referred as Nation) rule in India and its ill effects on the moral and spiritual efficacies of the people of India. He ripped apart the cruel motives behind the industrial, economic, educational, social and political policies of Europe against all those countries it invaded and captured with main focus on how it affected India, whose history has been made across different races over centuries of suffering and learning not by material organization but by natural social cooperation and spiritual freedom.
He praises Japan and America for its different approach towards Nationalism unlike Europe. He appreciates the ideology of these Nations which imbibed power and wealth through love and admiration but not through ambition and greed. He warns the forces of Nation against the creation of politicians, soldiers, manufacturers and bureaucrats which he says shall bring down the entire gigantic organization of the Nation one day to bite the dust. That would be the day when the East would come back into its hay days and start a new history. He appeals to Japan and America to view the ideologies and histories of many countries like India which cannot be called as Nations due to their diverse coexistence of different races with respect and positive approach instead of insulting them and treating them as beggars.

The reader would be awestruck to come across such a vast expanse of usage of English verbatim in this book. I am totally perplexed by the way European organization has been constructively criticized apart by the author at the same time warning it of the detrimental effects it would have if they force upon spiritual countries like India.

The author seems to have totally targeted the European way of conquering the World through its massive Organization of military and commerce, but seems to have ignored the benefits it brought upon all those countries it went to. A book very much for our times

This Penguin reprint is important and timely. I believe that, among other things, Tagore's NATIONALISM should be thoroughly read and carefully thought about by every member of both the British Parliament and the U.S. Congress and White House. (There are also closely related things in the middle pieces of Tagore's CREATIVE UNITY and in his LETTERS TO A FRIEND.) The indictment of the nationalism developed in the West and the account of the contrasting ways in which human beings have related to each other in older civilisations of the East have the strongest application to our own times. Knowledge of them could also promote a more sympathetic understanding of current suspicion of and hostility to the West. The West has given much to the rest of the world, but Tagore shows and/or reminds us that it also owes the world the gravest apology. He himself writes at one point in the later CREATIVE UNITY that the post-WW1 move to 'internationalism' made little difference to the arrogance and greed that still governed much of the West's behaviour to the rest of the world. Those vices obviously still govern much of it now, as in the appalling invasion of Iraq. The full and proper making of that grave apology to the rest of the world could help promote worldwide peace by being the start of a more concilatory because penitent attitude in the West - to, among others, the so-called Islamic 'extremists'.

The narrator is an elderly cleric in a small parish "in the neglected center of a city of considerable size" somewhere in Europe, in some indeterminate time; the story of St. Julian once brought the cleric out of despair, and he is anxious to tell it himself for the masses, for Julian is "the Saint of them that have sinned uncommonly, whether by heart or by hand." Born in medieval Europe to a noble family, Julian has blood lust from a young age. As a teenager, he goes hunting purely for the ecstasy of the kill. One day a stag, dying at his hand, prophesies that Julian will murder his own parents. Julian flees his home in terror of the prophesy, becomes a brutal warrior and takes a wife. While he is away pillaging, his parents come to his castle. His wife receives them warmly and unwittingly offers them her bed. When Julian comes home the stag's prediction reaches its inevitable, tragic fulfillment. In his grief, Julian becomes a beggar, seeking degradation in every form and doing good works for the poor, which include building a hospice and inns. The story is beautifully written, in a style that is formal without being overly lyrical or stagily archaic. The fable-like narrative won't be for everyone, but those interested in the lives of the saints will enjoy this imaginative tale.

Les Miserables, anime version.

This is a book I wanted to like, but the more I read, the faster I read, just to be done with it. It struck me as Les Mis, done in anime. The various faces of Julian are stark and narrowly drawn, with so little transition between faces and little insight into his being that one can scarcely reconcile one image with the other, let alone see some internal transition toward repentance. The narrator was little more than a cardboard cutout propped up by a few cursory claims of faith.

Still, Wangerin's talent pops out sporadically, enough that I'd try another book of his. But with this one, I was left with the feeling that Wangerin simply did not take the time to write as he seems capable of writing.

Medeval, Christian, and a Man, a Hunter of the forest.

"Saint Julian", by Walter Wangerin Jr., is now 4 years old but I'm glad I came across it. It's a good fictional story of a man who would become a Saint. He is the finest hunter of all time, and becomes the greatest knight of all time, and then life takes it's toll with him. He falls into poverty, somewhat by his own design, but is Sainted because of his unfailing devotion to helping those in need, even to the very end of his breath. He bestows mercy.

The story of Saint Julian (aka: Red Knight, Ferryman) is told by a minor cleric who is being tested by his own aging but faithful in researching all he can find on the life of Julian for preservation. He learns of the curse put upon Julian, finds the facts, and records them for the reader.

Frequently, a sentence is placed in Latin, sometimes rephrased in English, sometimes not. It adds a bit of color to the telling, even if the translation is missing.

This is not a typical Medieval tale. Here's a book that should not be overlooked by male readers.

In the Grip of Addictive Sin

Wangerin has done a powerful job describing the effects of sin in a life that's not totally given over to Christ. Julian typifies the believer whose belief is only through cultural heritage and not a heart change. This book chronicles the depths that sin will take us...to the end of our very self, where Christ will be waiting after we ineffectively try to deal with all our shame and self loathing. It occurs to me that the problem is addiction and the recovery process is through Christ alone. This book had the same effect on me as Frank Perreti's book "The Oath". Very convicting. Well worth the read.

About the Author
Alec Fisher was Director of the Centre for Research in Critical Thinking at the University of East Anglia, until his retirement in 1999. He is the author of Critical Thinking: An Introduction (Cambridge, 2001), which has already been translated into several languages. He continues to lecture and conduct workshops on reasoning and critical thinking skills all over the world.
