Sanchez's debut novel chronicles the senior year of three gay teens struggling with issues ranging from coming out to first love to an HIV scare. The story lines communicate a hint of an educational agenda (Sanchez sprinkles in the names of support groups like Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays into the novel, and lists contact information for organizations at the end), but the characters' complicated feelings are well drawn, and readers will find themselves interested in each of the protagonists' lives. Sanchez creates modern situations that speak to contemporary teens: Nelson and Kyle stand up to their principal for the right to form a gay-straight alliance at their school, and Nelson has unprotected sex with a stranger he meets online. The relationship between Kyle and closeted jock Jason also develops realistically, and the awkward triangle among the three males builds subtly and convincingly. Readers will learn and understand both boys' perspectives, from Jason's fear that he will be found out to Kyle's growing agitation at his mixed messages. Some of the writing is stilted ("You would've thought the prodigal son had come home," Sanchez writes when Kyle finally connects with his father), and some of the language and sexual situations may be too mature for some readers, but overall there's enough conflict, humor and tenderness to make this story believable--and touching. When Jason, trying to sort out his confusion, shows up at a Rainbow Youth meeting, he is greeted by both "Nelly" and Kyle, who are as shocked to see him as he is to be seen. This uncomfortable confrontation starts the ball rolling down a path of deception, denial, revelation, and acceptance not only for the three young men, but also for their friends, family, and all concerned. This gutsy, in-your-face debut novel speaks the language of real life for gay teens, that of the ecstasy, heartache, and humor of first love (and sex), that of daily harassment and fear, that of having what it takes to stand up and be proud of who you are. There will no doubt be challenges to Rainbow Boys, much like the challenges of Judy Blume's Forever (Turtleback, 1975) when it was published in the 1970s. First-novelist Sanchez writes with passion and understanding as well as some welcome humor, but it's issues, not characters that drive this novel. Homophobia, body image, gay stereotyping, AIDS, support groups, gay/straight alliances--all are shoehorned into an overcrowded plot that sometimes comes dangerously close to the didactic. What saves the story from problem-novel limbo are its realistic, right-on dialogue; its sympathetic characters who rise above the stereotypical; and--most important--its focus on love as the heart of homosexuality. Ultimately, the author demonstrates, coming out is really coming in--entering a circle of support and self-acceptance that may lead to a more universal community of acceptance and tolerance. Brilliant Love Story About Gay High School Seniors

This is the best book I've read all year. Mr. Sanchez is truly a gifted writer and proved it with this debut work. I immediately fell in love with all three of his characters (okay, I mostly fell in love with Jason). The drama that Sanchez so beautifully built into this story had me teary-eyed at just about every other chapter. That's the kind of story I love the most: one that can make me feel exactly what the characters are feeling. What an amazing love story he portrayed, what with Jason struggling to come out, with Kyle trying his best to get Jason to love him, and Nelson trying to get Kyle to understand that he loves him. I'm so glad everything turned out on a positive note. In addition to the storyline, I really like Sanchez's writing style: the use of concise phrases, and some very witty ones as well, to convey a lot of information was right on target. I can't wait to read something else by this author.

Hardships and hurdles of homosexuality

Sanchez's novel chronicles three gay high school boys. One is out, proud, and totally a flamer. One, his best friend, is still in the closet. Another, with a steady girlfriend, has just come to the realization and is trying his best to understand - and hide, in a way, this new discovery.
Nelson is the flamer. With a trillion earrings, crazy hair, and a love for fashion, he sees no need to keep his secret. He's been out and has many friends and people who like him despite this. And why isn't he likeable? He's a loyal friend, a wonderful listener, and can provide his best friend, Kyle, with good advice and a shoulder to cry on.
Kyle is gay but has yet to announce it to the world. Nonetheless, he's known the truth since an early age. People do expect he is a homosexual because he always hangs around with Nelson. Their friendship is incredibly strong. Kyle's parents are loving and supportive - at first only his mother seems to be, but his father does eventually come around once Kyle gives them the news. Nelson wants to be more than just friends but Kyle only has eyes for Jason.
Jason is a jock with a beautiful girlfriend named Debra. They've been going steady for two years and even have had sex. So he can't be gay, can he? Well...he tries, like some may, to deny and supress the thought, tries to dismiss it from his mind. But when he makes love to Debra, he pictures men. He dreams of naked men. He thinks of Kyle. With an alcoholic father who constantly calls him weak, home life is sometimes an obstacle. It is difficult for Jason to muster the courage to tell Debra but when he does, her reaction is normal. After all, she does love him.
Sanchez's novel is real. When the two boys finally come out of the closet, family and friend reactions are totally understandable, apt to happen in those situations. Sanchez's ability to convey character depth and meaning are incredible and make this novel what it is. You'll enjoy this book whether you happen to be straight, gay, or bisexual. And, to be frank, it really opened my eyes. Although I choose to be straight, it helped me realize that love between same sexes can be just as real, just as true. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

Gay teens in high school

Sanchez's debut novel features three guys in high school as each deals with being gay, coming out, and other personal problems. Nelson is totally out at school and is often targeted for harassment from some of the students. His mom is in PFLAG, so his home life is okay, but Nelson can't tell his best friend Kyle how he truly feels for him. Kyle is slowly coming out of the closet, but the process is forced to speed up after his mom finds a porn magazine in his room. Luckily, his parents work toward being supportive of him. Kyle has always had a crush on Jason, one of the popular jocks at school. Jason has been dating the same girl for two years, and yet he's had these feelings for other guys. When he enlists Kyle to help him with schoolwork, Jason struggles to deal with what he's feeling for another guy, as well as dealing with an alcoholic father at home. This book is entirely filled with sappy and wish-fulfilling events and interactions that lend it an almost overly-sweet feel. Yet it's also entirely delightful. Reading "Rainbow Boys" is like looking back on high school and imagining the things that could have happened, all through rose-colored glasses. While the characters and the story do lack a certain depth, the book overall entertains and gives a hopeful glimpse into the future of high schools.

Frightening enough to make pause for a reality check !!

Never have I had to close a book to check my surroundings and get out of bed to arm my security alarm !! I've read all of Sanford, King, Rice, and Cornwell and never had felt the fear that I did with this book. I just can't wait for his next ! He makes Hannibul read like Mother Goose !!! It's a keeper !

Different kind of mystery

This story draws you in but not by identifying with the characters. It's through the vivid description the author gives to the characters and the dialogue that make it interesting. It's as if you're right there watching the story unfold. The book is chilling and unique because Toyer is a character that at first seems highly unlikely but is made believable. I also found some unexpected humor in this book. In one of the most suspenseful parts, I found a smile on my face from the conversation of the characters Toyer and Maude. I really loved the part where Billy, the uncastable actor who parks cars, takes the car of a famous actor and finds out "you're definitely what you drive". It's a long book and I didn't read it all at once but I couldn't wait to pick it up again. A very nice change from run of the mill mysteries.

Terrible science and crazy women, but tons of fun!

The anatomical mistakes in this book really drive me bonkers. Come on, if you're going to cite a muscle by its proper name, at least get it right! The author seriously needed a reality check by a real doctor and a real cop on many aspects of the plot. I was also irritated by the otherwise brilliant doctor who followed terrible home defense advice given to her by a (dead) man, and then suddenly mimicked the other female characters by making utterly atrocious decisions. That said, I must admit I was hooked by the prose. It wasn't gramatically correct: Instead, it was a convincing, emotional stream of thought. Toyer is well worth reading if you can get past the glaring mistakes. I rated it as a 3 because I am notoriously geeky in that regard. Not-so-picky readers will like it more.

According to this view, only soldiers and members of the governing elite would have been free to travel. However Suraiya Faroqhi's extensive archival research shows that this was not the case. Pious men from all walks of life went on pilgrimage to Mecca, slaves fled from their masters and craftspeople traveled in search of work. Faroqhi shows that even those craftsmen who did not travel extensively had some level of mobility and that the Ottoman sultans and viziers, who spent so much effort in attempting to control the movements of their subjects, could do so only within often very narrow limits. Challenging existing historiography and providing an important new perspective, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars of Ottoman history.

About the Author

Reginald Leon Green is Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Memphis. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Memphis, he was on the faculty of educational administration at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. Earlier, Dr. Green served at the teacher, principal, deputy superintendent, and superintendent levels of elementary and secondary education. In 1977, Dr. Green was one of five educators chosen nationally to participate in the Rockefeller Foundation's Superintendency Preparation Program; and in 1996, he was selected as an Associate to the Institute for Educational Renewal, under the leadership of Dr. John Goodlad.

Most recently, Dr. Green co-authored with Sergiovanni the seventh edition of the book entitled The Principalship: A Reflective Practice Perspective. He has also published the first edition of The Four Dimensions of Principal Leadership: A Foundation for Leading 21st Century Schools. Additionally, he has authored a book on inner-city education, as well as various articles concerning such topics as educational restructuring, primary grade restructuring, gang violence, and other contemporary educational issues. He has completed national inquiries into nurturing characteristics that exist in schools, and standards and assessment measures being established as part of school renewal. This work led to the development of the Center for Urban School Leadership, where Dr. Green administered programs for five years to prepare principals for leadership in urban schools using a non-traditional approach. Currently, Dr. Green teaches courses in educational leadership with a focus on instructional leadership, school renewal, and models for turning around low performing schools.
