These include issues concerning the nature and order of organizational processes, the stimulus factors that engage the mechanisms of organization, the developmental stage at which the mechanisms of organization are available, the role of past experience and learning in organization, the neural mechanisms underlying perceptual organization, and the relations between perceptual organization and other cognitive processes, in particular, object recognition and visual attention. Divided into four parts, the book is designed not only to detail the current state of the art in the field but also to promote an interdisciplinary approach to the study of perceptual organization. Part I presents an overview of the problem of perceptual organization, different frameworks for understanding perceptual organization, and a state-of-the-art summary of the domain. Part II details which organizational processes are hardwired in the perceptual system, which are acquired through experience, and how object perception relates to other aspects of cognition. Part III describes various attempts to understand the neural mechanisms underlying perceptual organization using two different approaches--neurophysiological and neuropsychological. Part IV offers a computational approach to the problem. This book is intended for cognitive psychologists, neuroscientists, computational vision scientists, and developmental psychologists.

I can't believe that there is only one review of this book! Although this is not the best book on evolutionary psychology ever written, it was the first that I ever read on the subject and I have to say that it influenced me profoundly. This book has had a greater impact on the way I think, feel and view life than any other book I have read before or since. Now, I can't read a novel, listen to a love song, analyze my own behavior, or think about any human behavior without wondering "What would an evolutionary psychologist think about that?" To us humans, the study of evolutionary psychology is the most basic of all studies. It underpins all of our activities.
A more recent book on the same subject is Robert Wright's 'The Moral Animal: Why We are the Way We Are, The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology'. David Barash also has a couple of good ones. 'The Myth of Monogamy' and 'Making Sense of Sex'.

revolutionary book about human evolution

i agree with the other reviewers that this has to be one of the most powerfully influential books i have ever read. i have a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology, yet i never learned as much about human nature than when i read this book along with desmond morris' two greatest masterpieces, naked ape and human zoo. why this book is not more famous, i can only attribute to most people not thinking deeply enough about what makes us tick.

Great compilation, use it for design

A very comprehensive distillation of experimental polymer property knowledge into data that can be used to predict properties of polymers where no experimental data exist. Fairly accurate and a great way to explore what-if scenarios to tweak existing polymers to enhance certain traits. An invaluable reference that relates structure to properties. Includes work by Van Krevelen and other giants in the field. I use it in combination with Polymer-CAD software to create some polymers that are, to say the least, very challenging to synthesize. Looking at buying the Fourth Edition soon.

Encouraging in Tone, Brilliant in Execution: The Best.

Mr. Sieger's book, Natural Born Winners, is the most applicable self-development book currently available. As applicability is the most important quality of any book in this genre, NBW must also qualify as a candidate for Best Self Development Book Ever.

Sieger begins with a brief memoir then smoothly transitions his life lessons into principles from which we can all learn. The transition happens early, carefully keeping the book's focus on the reader. Robin maintains a caring & encouraging tone throughout; he wants you to grow, to realize your full potential. NBW is stuffed full of engaging quotes and anecdotes, all neatly laid out; creating a personal development safari as anchored by a seasoned guide. The book's pace is torrid, it's three hundred pages can be read in a couple of days. NBW is also wonderful as a reference, it's steps for realization are well segmented and an ease to locate.

With this revised edition of NBW, Sieger should no doubt be listed alongside Napoleon Hill and Earl Nightingale as the best writers of the genre. I highly recommend discovering what it is to be a Natural Born Winner.

ambitious 14 yr old girl

My dad actually bought this book (he read it before me) and i decided to pick it up for myself and read it...I haven't finished it yet, but I'm about halfway through and it's really good. It really makes you believe you can do anything with just a few extremely basic, simple, easy principles. How could I not think of it before? Basically, this is some of the stuff your parents and educators have told you to do your whole life ("believe in yourself", etc.) but the author puts it in an understandable, easy-to-read format that makes you think, "Wow this is all I need to know. I really should be doing this." and he really proves his point really well by giving great explanations, examples, and inspiring anecdotes along the way. And everything just makes sense!! There isn't really a word to describe it, but really anyone, no matter the age (but since I am younger and have my whole life to think about, this became a real inspiration to me). I recommend this. I just can't get over it...IT'S ALL SO SIMPLE!!

Its all in the mind

This book continues to be a support for me. I have read it a few times now, each time when I feel down, useless, de-motivated and just a waist of life, and each time it has picked me up, made me dust the cobwebs of self doubt and negativity away replacing them with a feeling of renewed power, enthusiasm and happiness. Success is within all of us as Robin says "it all starts in our minds". All the best on your own journey to becoming a success!

This is a book that was difficult to locate in LYS (local yarn shops) so had to be ordered on-line, always a gamble with knitting instructions. I was pleasantly surprised. The photos, more than one for each item, were clear and precise enough to see details otherwise in question while also being appealing to look at. The instructions were as clear as most, perhaps requiring caution for a beginning knitter (crocheter) but otherwise easy to follow.
I would have liked a better technical / mechanical description of the yarns, particularly on the cover, as it uses only 2 weights; and perhaps patterns with more variations.
Overall, the photos are appealing; so far the items are coming out within dimensions given if gauge is verified beforehand. Most of the items are knitted; one or two was crocheted. Overall, artistically well-done and encouraging to look at. Patterns cute and creative, medium ability, and some blocking, to construct items.

Filled with beauty, variety and fascinating patterns. Lots of inspiration and some very challenging projects. There are a few here that aren't too demanding, but I wouldn't advise this for a beginner unless you're looking to jump fast and far. Beautiful use of color and texture, includes a little of every technique to appeal to your different moods. so far I've just found the need for errata in one pattern, so this is something you can buy feeling secure that your questions will be answered

Works for other thick and thin yarn brands.

This book has been very helpful for me. I had purchased some thick and thin yarn a couple years ago only to find that there were very few patterns for this yarn if I wanted to make a sweater. Although My yarn is not the Rowan yarn featured in the book, the suggested needle size and gauge are the same. The pictures were also helpful as it was difficult to visualise how the thick and thin yarn would look knitted up as a garment.
I am currently knitting one of the sweaters in the book and my yarn is working fine with the pattern.
I do realize that this is an English publication; I can't help but wish that it included measurements in inches as well as centimeters.

I would whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in the development and processes of the British political system.
