Providing such a book is important for at least three reasons:

First, doctoral/postgraduate students must, in the course of their dissertation projects, provide a literature review of what they have researched within a given topic/area. The manner in which papers are referenced here makes it possible to conduct a detailed investigation of their approaches, such as research frameworks, methodologies, applied theories and empirical observations. About the Author

Dr. John T. (Tom) Mentzer is the Harry J. and Vivienne R. Bruce Chair of Excellence in Business in the Department of Marketing, Logistics and Transportation at the University of Tennessee. He has written more than 170 papers and articles, which have appeared in the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the Journal of MacroMarketing, Industrial Marketing Management, the Journal of Marketing Education, the Columbia Journal of World Business, Research in Marketing, Social Indicators Research, the International Journal of Physical Distribution and Materials Management, the Journal of Business Logistics, the Logistics and Transportation Review, Transportation Journal, the Journal of Business Research, Advances in Business Research, the Journal of Forecasting, the Journal of Business Forecasting, and numerous conference proceedings. He has co-authored five books: SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT, SALES FORECASTING MANAGEMENT, SIMULATED PRODUCT SALES FORECASTING, MARKETING TODAY, and READINGS IN MARKETING TODAY and edited the monograph MARKETING EDUCATION SOFTWARE. Dr. Mentzer was recognized in 1996 as one of the five most prolific authors in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and in 1999 as the most prolific author in the Journal of Business Logistics. He was awarded the Academy of Marketing Science Outstanding Marketing Teacher Award in 2001.

Matthew B. Myers is Director of Global Business Initiatives and Associate Professor of Marketing at The University of Tennessee. Dr. Myers' primary areas of research are in international pricing, international supply chain operations, and comparative marketing systems. Prior to joining The University of Tennessee, Matt worked as a financial advisor with Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, and was a financial analyst with IBM-Argentina. Professor Myers’ research has been published in a number of academic outlets including the Journal of Retailing, Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of International Marketing, the Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Production Research, and the Journal of World Business.

Theodore P. Stank is the John H. Dove Distinguished Professor of Logistics and Transportation at The University of Tennessee. Dr. Stank's business background includes sales and marketing experience as an employee of Abbott Laboratories Diagnostic Division. He served as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy prior to his industry and academic experience. He has also performed consulting and executive education services for numerous manufacturing and logistics firms. He is an active member of the Council of Logistics Management.  

His research interests focus on the strategic implications and performance benefits associated with integrated logistics and supply chain management concepts, specifically related to logistics integration, communications and information exchange, outsourcing, and operational flexibility/responsiveness. He is a co-author with Donald J. Bowersox, and David J. Closs of 21st Century Logistics: Making Supply Chain Integration a Reality (Council of Logistics Management; 2000), has published over 55 articles in academic and professional journals, and has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching.

Extraordinary comprehensive

The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management is an excellent book. My interest in it stems from the fact that it contains a chapter on risk management. It was after reading Manuj and Mentzer's articles on 'Global Supply Chain Risk Management' and 'Global Supply Chain Risk Management Strategies' that I came across this book, when searching for more papers from Mentzer and/or Manuj, and naturally, I decided to see if there was something on supply chain risk in it. There was.

Deja vu

Unfortunately, the chapter doesn't say much more than what has already been said in the above articles. This book chapter follows more or less the same structure as the Global Supply Chain Risk Management article, it even uses the same figure, but it is better written and more geared towards the practitioner, with examples of how to put the model into use. Personally I find the book chapter preferable to the article. But - there is a very good reason to look closer at that chapter, it is a figure that perfectly illustrates how a risk matrix can be put to use when assessing supply chain risk.

Comprehensive

As to the rest of the book, it is to say the least, comprehensive, filled with 600 pages of intensely condensed knowledge, covering everything about Global Supply Chain Management from A to Z.

Conclusion

The book comes with a hefty price tag, but reasonably priced used ones are usually available. Although I have focused solely on the chapter on risks, I did browse the other chapters, and I must say they are equally solidly written. It is handbook indeed, allowing the reader to focus on one area of investigation at the time, while never leaving the whole chain out of sight.

Understanding "the complexities of a global, cross functional, cross-enterprise view of business"

Here in a single volume is a wealth of information and counsel provided by many of the world's foremost authorities on global supply chain management. The material has been selected and edited with meticulous care by John T. Mentzer, Matthew B, Myers, and Theodore P. Stank who also collaborated on Chapter 1 ("Why Global Supply Chain Management?") and contributed to others. They provide this definition of Supply Chain Management (SCM) which was devised by the Supply Chain Research Group at the University of Tennessee in 2004: "the systematic, strategic coordination of the traditional business functions within a particular company and across businesses within the supply chain, for the purposes of improving the long-term performance of the individual companies and the supply chain as a whole." After the introductory chapter, the material is organized as follows:

Part I: Understanding Global Supply Chains

Overview: The contributors focus on strategy, assessment of the global environment, value and customer service management, demand management, knowledge management, and process orientation.

Part II: Managing the Functions

Overview: The contributors focus on management of marketing and sales, product, operations, integrated logistics, inventory, transportation, warehouse, and personnel.

Part III: Resource Management

Overview: The contributors focus on the lean supply chain ("The path to Excellence"), financial and risk management, and interpretation systems (i.e. knowledge, strategy, and performance).

Part IV: Managing the Relations

Overview: The contributors focus on relationship management, logistics outsourcing, international sourcing (i.e. "redressing the balance"), negotiating throughout the supply chain, interfunctional coordination, intercorporate coordination, and global supply chain control.

Part V: Making It Happen

Overview: The contributors focus on supply chain innovation, global supply chain security, diagnosing the supply chain, and change management.

Mentzer, Myers, and Stank conclude from the previously provided definition of SCM that it is "a management process that deals with inbound and outbound flows, from the perspective of the focal organization, its suppliers, and its customers. Superb guide, very complete

Well, you can't really do Nepal without Armington's book. I went on a trek with Stan in my younger days (nearly 40 years ago!) and he became a life-long friend. So, when my son and his army buddies wanted to do a trek, I bought him this book (which he read), as my first-edition copy was long since out of date, and put him in touch with Stan. He was impressed by both. Stan arranged their trek to Annapurna, and put them up at his house on their way. Everything went well. Stan's a great guy, loves Nepal (his adopted country), and knows all there is that's worth knowing. You can't go wrong.

Here's another book to get in addition to L.P. Nepal

This book is great! I like to travel and not be a "typical american", and this book really helped me in that effort of knowing the culture and the land. I spent 5 weeks in Nepal and was more educated about the country/traditions/culture than any tourist I ran into. I spent a week in Kathmandu, 3 weeks trekking the Annapurna Circuit, and 1 week kayaking the Seti River. I used the medical section of this book (almost everyone gets sick), but should have bought a little medical book available in the bookstores in Kathmandu. Also, the trekking information in this book is good, but it's not great. If you want the BEST guidbook for trekking the Annapurna Circuit or Everest, then go to yetizone.you know what. It's a good site and the webmaster publishes his own guidebook for cheap! It's the best darn guidebook out there without question. Everyone I ran into in Nepal that looked at my book, and I mean EVERYONE, wanted to buy it or make copies. Also, it's not really a book, it's more like a little spiral bound pamphlet, so it weighs practically nothing, and I could keep it easily accessible in my cargo pocket.

I looked at some other guidebooks, specifically, the one by Stephen Bezruchka. He is a doctor, and it shows in his guidbook. He has the best medical section of all the guidebooks, and between his and the Lonely Planet one, I learned A LOT. If I had to choose one book to take with me (weight is an issue when trekking), I'd choose the Lonely Planet, along with the guidbook from yetizone.

Great travel advice, as usual for Lonely Planet

I bought this book to prepare for my trip to Nepal. I found the advice in the book regarding cultural mores and appropriate behavior to be invaluable. The descriptions of places, restaurants, and hotels was accurate. I would have liked to see longer lists of accommodations. One thing I learned in Nepal is there are many, many more hotels than this book describes.

Here's why I gave it a 4: if you are over 40, go out and buy reading glasses before purchasing this book. The font size is very small and difficult to read for those of us with older eyes, especially in the dim light of an airplane or a Nepal Hotel Room.

I have included hypnosis and self-hypnosis practice in my personal self-improvement regimen for decades. Yet, upon encountering the elegance of Cathal O'Briaian's presentation here, I found much new insight and value. The author is a well-respected and credentialed clinical hypnotherapist and psychotherapist, a writer and lecturer, and a member of the Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy.

First, and perhaps most important, the author does not unnecessarily complicate the subject or mystify in any way. In the field of hypnosis, in particular, and self-mastery, in general, this is noteworthy. Instead, what we find in this book is a clear and concise methodological approach, which focuses upon the essentials of both understanding and practice.

The first part of "Powerful Mind Through Self-Hypnosis" deals with the nature and history of hypnosis and the transformative power of positive intention and a program of self-improvement using affirmation and suggestion techniques.

The second section provides specific procedures for addressing a host of life issues, such as depression, addiction, and pain management using specific self-hypnosis techniques. This is valuable information at any price. This book is a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in self-improvement and the positive power of the focused mind.

This is a truly amazing book, highly recommended!

When I saw the cover of "Powerful Mind through Self-Hypnosis" I was immediately drawn to it. To put it simple, this book has changed every aspect of my being in a very positive way. At work, my friends keep telling me how great I look and at home I feel relaxed and happy all the time. I would never have thought that a book could have such a profound impact on my life and I thank the author from the heart.

Through using Cathal's simple and natural self-hypnotic techniques, I find self-hypnosis easy to use each day in all my activities. This book takes the mysticism out of hypnosis by getting you back to basic self-control, through breathing, suggestion, imagination, basically using the tools you already have but fail to use effectively. In other editions I've read on the same subject, authors have overcomplicated the simple process of hypnosis by adding to much 'magic' and not enough 'logic' to the equation. This is why it's perfect for the beginner as well as the professional. It makes proper use of the mind and body you have by helping you tap in to the power of the subconscious area of the mind, to put it simply.

The structure and layout of the book is also very useful for those who want to use it as a psychological guide, kind of an 'A to Z' of symptoms and how to help overcome them through self-transformation. For example, if you suffer from anxiety or depression, you can go straight to those areas and find solutions. For the professional, it's easy for them to get a basic understanding of everything to do with hypnosis and the mind, as well as incorporate the well written scripts provided for their own private therapy sessions.

O'Briain has also done very well to reinvigorate self-hypnosis as a pure and natural form of self-healing and I'm glad he took the initiative to show people that it's a phenomonen that has been around since the dawn of time, used for mind strengthening and not for mind control. It's as natural as breathing and O'Briain dedicates an entire chapter to the breath, which is central to his teachings and an integral part of the self-hypnotic process.

This book has the potential to change the minds of the masses. I hope it reaches a wide and varied audience because it's a book for everyone. My congratulations to the author on a wonderful book full of surprises and healing.

Self Hypnosis Book Does NOT Shy Away From Tough Problems

I just had to take a moment to write about this book. I've seen a lot of self-hypnosis books, but this one is the best I've seen at addressing very difficult issues for the general public or for those just learning how to self-hypnotize. Issues like Drug Addiction, Alcoholism, Skin Disorders, Depression among the usual weight loss and stop smoking (and others) can be found in this wonderful book. The author also makes you feel comfortable with the hypnosis process giving you step by step instructions.

While I do not believe or teach at my hypnosis training school, Dallas Hypnosis Career Training, that hypnosis is relaxation, (or that deep breathing is necessary) most people (not to mention many hypnotists) do teach that, and the method Mr. O'Briain coaches the reader to use seems very nice for relaxation.....and for most likely going into trance.

I think this is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to get their feet wet to learn and use self-hypnosis and for professional hypnotists looking for some new scripts and/or ideas for use with their clients too.

IMHO, this one was not as good as the 1st one simply because I can't root for a relationship if I only like 1 of the MCs. In Book 1, Dane was not only sweet and kind, but he seemed smart and proud of who he was. Here he was insecure, yes, but he was also extremely flaky when it came to what he wanted. I can understand being wary of men & relationships, and not wanting to get involved, but the way he kept pushing and pulling Jax's emotions - have sex, push him away, have sex, stop speaking to him - was frustrating and annoying. Maybe it was just the way it was written, but I didn't pity Dane at all, I didn't even like him. Not enough was given about why he was the way that he was. His father and ex-husband may have been verbally abusive and/or neglectful, but when Jax told Cade he'd treated him like every other man in his life, where did that come from? Nothing about other guys was really provided. Another thing that didn't make sense was Dane's never-fully-explained, "all over needles" body pain/excruciating headache/furniture destroying/nervous breakdown/blackout. What was that? He said it was something that he'd never done before, but he was willing to send his child away for the next time it happened? What as IT? How could he be so sure it would happen again? Why was he the only one who thought he might end up hurting the child? And he said he would often hear his father's voice and Isaac's voice, was he hearing other voices, too? He sounded like he could have used some serious counseling. You can't just write in something like that and leave it open-ended.

As for the action elements of the story, the "favor for a friend" that turns into "a deadly encounter " (according to the Amazon description) is all detailed in the first chapter. It's a short replay of the scene from Book 1 where Callan, Rhys, and Finn finally find out who's been causing all the trouble for them and it comes to a head. As for the "danger" that "looms" (LOL) when it's revealed who and what it is, it's rather anticlimactic. The set up also didn't make any sense, because what person who's been having 2 people take turns watching over him & his child (plus 1 running tap checks on his phone) and had a security system installed in his home, allows his newborn child completely out of his sight to go somewhere with a defenseless little old lady? Especially in a town full of people you barely know when you don't know who might have it in for you. I'm sorry, but the only reason this got 2 stars was because of Jax.

Not as good as the first

I didn't like Dane in this book. He didn't seem like the same character as he was in book one. He acted like a jerk to Jax and was completely self centered and dismissive. I did like Jax and really didn't feel like he and Dane were a match. The plot was kind of weak as well. There wasn't any real tension or suspense. I will read future installments, as I liked the secondary characters.

3.5*. Good enough that I'll re-read this again, but though it had the elements for a great tale, it lacked a little depth.

This book can be read as a standalone, though the author warns that there are some spoilers for book 1 in it. I enjoyed it without reading the first, which is a MMM tale, and it's good enough to make me want to read the third.

This tale has a strong alpha male lead in Jax, a very likeable but slightly damaged older lead in Dane, father of baby Emma, and it has a storyline that brings Jax into their lives and gives him a reason to stay...however, the danger that there supposedly was in the tale never really panned out to anything, despite the rather shocking opening scene that prepped me for more of the same violence.

That opening scene wasn't really explained in sufficient detail, and the supposed cold-bloodedness of one of the faceless baddies did not fit in with the reveal in the ending, so I think that the author and her editor missed something here.

Overall, it has decent guys, doesn't make enough of the baby whose age we don't get to know and who doesn't do anything but cry a tiny bit before being pacified by a bottle and falling asleep. We don't even really see Dane having a life other than feeding his daughter, despite him being a vet/trying to set up his practice. Jax gets to flex his muscles and get his gun out, but overall, the tale lacked depth. It could easily have been a 5* read with a little...more of all of the above.

The ground zero of docudrama teaching

This is a wonderful and highly readable book, which does a superb job of opening up a fascinating but hithertofore totally unexplored area of film and television. A must for anyone interested in the relations between fiction, reality, and drama and wants to know how to enter this fast growing script field and how to write punchy and dynamic scenarios. Absolutely five stars.
